SUBJECTS
This subject will focus on the key elements of counselling. You will learn to recognise non-directive and directive approaches to counselling and identify common defence mechanisms. We will discuss the use of therapies in the treatment of PTSD and explain the appropriate treatments. You will also learn online and telephone related counselling techniques.
Listening and Bonding
In this module you will learn the unique relationship between the counsellor and client. You will recognise the importance of a good environment and appropriate conditions and behaviour for telephone and online counselling. The benefits and limitations of the five key elements of listening will be discussed as well as the benefits of listening and guiding when counselling clients.
Reflection
The five basic responses of non-directive counselling will be explored in this module. You will learn what feelings are and how they are expressed in the reflecting process.
Questioning
This course will discuss the importance of questioning. We will discuss the difference between open and closed questions and the role of questions in the counselling process. You will learn the goals of questioning and discuss what questions should be avoided.
Interview Techniques
In this subject you will learn how to identify the main micro-skills in interview techniques. You will give examples when it is appropriate or inappropriate for a counsellor to use each micro-skill and discuss the important elements of the micro-skills.
Changing Beliefs and Normalising
Through this module you will recognise the reasons for self-destructive beliefs, define Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and discuss its benefits. We will define normalising and explore where it has been applied before. You will also learn the symptoms and treatments for depression.
Finding Solutions
In this class we will explore the purpose of finding solutions and recognise the different ways to find them. You will learn how psychological blocks occur and ways to overcome them. The treatments available for drug addiction will also be discussed in this class.
Ending the Counselling
This subject will focus on the key elements of terminating a counselling session. We will discuss the importance of time management and the issue of dependency in the counselling process. You will also learn the difference between ending a session and terminating the counselling process.
