Through this subject, you will gain an understanding of the four key criteria used to identify abnormal behaviour and learn the main functions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). You will also explore the various disorders most commonly diagnosed in children and will leave being able to comment on the differences between diagnosing disorders in children and adults.

 

Delirium, Dementia, Amnestic & Cognitive Disorders
This subject will focus on the exploration of the three most common categories of cognitive disorders. Through this, you will learn about delirium and the core features of this disorder. You will also understand dementia as a disorder and the criteria surrounding it. This is to compare and contrast dementia and delirium. Furthermore, you will gain knowledge about amnestic disorders, including their causes. Finally, you will gain in-depth knowledge of research in biopsychology.

 

Addiction Support – Treatment for Drug and Alcohol Abuse
You will be able to define the term addiction, outline the various drugs of abuse and behavioural addictions and explain the current diagnostic criteria for substance and behavioural addiction. You will leave with the ability to evaluate the genetic and environmental factors that contribute to developing an addiction and the associated physiological and psychological changes. 

 

Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorders
This subject will provide you with vital knowledge around psychotic disorders, particularly psychosis and schizophrenia and their relevant treatments. You will have the ability to differentiate between the 7 types of delusional disorders including the ability to recognise differences between acute and chronic disorders. 

 

Depression and Related Conditions
This subject will provide you with in-depth knowledge surrounding depression, including the various psychological, social and physical symptoms associated. You will have an understanding of the three most common forms of depression, the risk factors associated with depression and the relationship between depression, age and gender. You will gain knowledge of the different subsets of depression including psychotic depression and seasonal affective disorder and you will leave with knowledge of the various treatments for the disorder.

 

Anxiety Disorders
This unit will equip you with the relevant knowledge and skills to manage anxiety disorder. Through this, you will be able to outline the symptoms of anxiety and the various subsets including Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). 

 

Somatoform, Factitious & Dissociative Disorders
Through this unit, you will learn how to differentiate between somatoform, factitious and dissociative disorders and equip you with the knowledge to provide a diagnostic evaluation of a client suffering from these disorders. You will also be able to evaluate the key differences between Munchausen’s Syndrome and Munchausen’s Syndrome by Proxy, as well as the main treatments available for both disorders.

 

Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders
Throughout this subject, you will gain an understanding of paraphilias, sexual disorders and their causal factors. Furthermore, you will be able to identify the factors of sexual and gender identity disorder and summarise the key characteristics and treatments for male and female sexual dysfunction. 

 

Eating and Sleep Disorders
This subject will provide you with the relevant information to understand eating disorders including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating and compulsive eating. You will also learn about various sleep-related disorders, including narcolepsy. Through this unit, you will be provided skills to identify causal factors for all of these disorders. 

 

Impulse-Control Disorders & Adjustment Disorder
You will learn relevant information regarding adjustment and impulse-control disorders, including common causes, symptoms and treatment options for those who are diagnosed. 

 

Personality Disorders
This unit will enable you to gain a better understanding of personality disorders, including the criteria to differentiate between normal and abnormal personalities. Through this, you will learn about the various personality disorders, including psychopathy,  to understand the causes, behaviour and treatment options.
